Stay True To Yourself, Or You Will Be Nothing To Nobody
You can’t please all of the people all of the time. But, always remember that the one person you absolutely have to live with your entire life is you.
So rather than running around trying to figure out what everyone else wants you to be, you should invest some time and effort into figuring out what you want to be and how to get there from here. Yes, it takes a little backbone, but that’s not anything that should scare you.
Know Your Own Mind
If you don’t know what you think or what you want, it is hard to stay true to yourself. A good investment in figuring out how to be true to who you are is to first know you are and know your own mind.
Some people have no idea what they think until they talk about it or write about it. A journal can be one good path to exploring what you think. Another might be finding someone you trust to act as a sounding board.
It can also help to take some time for yourself. Some people are fans of meditation. Others are big fans of long walks by themselves.
Whatever floats your boat. You don’t need to explain or justify. It’s your prerogative.
So don’t let anyone interfere with you getting good and acquainted with what you think about things. That’s one of the absolute worst things you can let anyone do to you is let them tell you what you should think.
Learn A Little Social And Emotional Intelligence
People can be real snakes. Most people aren’t as interested in your welfare as they may claim to be. If they are sweet talking you, you should be wondering what their angle is.
If you don’t know much about the many ways you can be fast talked or manipulated, you aren’t going to make it in this world. Read up on some social psychology topics and check out some books on negotiating.
This will be time well spent. A great book to start with “Getting to Yes.” It’s a quick and easy read and it is research based. The best of both worlds.
There are plenty of studies, books and articles that can help you up your game in this area so you know when to say “No thank you” instead of continuing to listen to some silver-tongued devil. Knowledge is power. Arm yourself before you go out into the social fray known as the world.
Have Some Pride
Like that old song says, Hold Your Head Up. Don’t let them change a thing that you’re doing.
If you know you are right, you don’t need to do it with bluster, but don’t let the jerks wear you down. Learn to stand your ground without turning it unnecessarily into a hill to die on.
Get the fact and be sure you are right, then don’t budge when you know you shouldn’t. If saying “yes” is a bad idea, say “no.” You will be happier in the long run.
Agreeing to the wrong things frequently ends up closing doors on the right things. This is a hidden cost of crumbling instead of standing your ground.
Don’t let anyone make you feel small. Keep your feet on the ground and your head in the clouds and move forward with confidence because you know you did the leg work and you’ve got this.
Take Time To Recharge
It’s hard to stay true to yourself if you “hangry” all the time. You know, hungry and angry about stuff because you are out of sorts physically.
Make sure you get enough sleep. Work on trying to eat right. Stay hydrated.
When you are working late or something and your writing just keeps getting angrier and angrier, you probably need a break. Even if you need to stay up and finish it, at least take a few minutes to use the bathroom, get a drink and a snack. Don’t just sit there getting more wound up.
The same goes true for standing your ground socially. Sometimes, we just need to take a break from all the drama.
It’s okay to lock the door and have a good cry or write a rant in your private journal. It’s okay to let the feelings out in a safe way and admit to yourself you feel kicked in the gut.
Then put on some Chumbawamba and start telling yourself that you get knocked down, but you get up again. They will never, ever keep you down.
They can’t win if you don’t stay down. If you keep getting back up, you will eventually be the last one standing.
Rock on with your bad self.
Go forth and conquer your world.
