What Kind Of Customer Do You Have?

by Cary Bergeron on October 17, 2011

Everyone wants more customers, visitors or clients right?

If not you probably won’t be in business very long or be making much money.

When I think of customers two types come to mind for me.  The “transactional” and the “relational” customers.

Transactional Customers

  1. Only interested in the one purchase
  2. They want the best/lowest price and don’t care about anything else
  3. Don’t care about brand
  4. Have the lowest return on investment because they will switch companies/products on the drop of a hat

Relational Customers

  1. Trust the company/person they are doing business with
  2. Are brand loyal and will pay more for it
  3. Don’t really care about price and base their loyalty off of experience and quality.

Think about it for a min.  When was the last time you drove past half a dozen restaurants or places to eat just to get to that one place that has the best steaks.  You know the one, the steakhouse that knows how to cook a steak right every time and when you order a beer it comes out frosty cold.  How many places do you drive by to get there?  You pass up Applebees and Chilis along the way because you know they don’t do it right.  Driving to that steakhouse makes you a relational customer and you’ll pay more for it.

Keep this in mind when creating websites, products and attracting customers via SEO.

Are you treating your customers/visitors as a transactional or relational customer?

Give it some thought and make the tweaks accordingly and maybe it will translate into more $$$.

Hello Cary. This is a bit off topic but i cannot help it :) Have you felt the impact of the recent panda updates [panda 2.6 ]? It seems a lot of web masters have been impacted. Some positively and some negatively. Most say they find loss through the long tail traffic. If you can do a post on how to escape it, it will be helpful. Thanks so much in advance. Your income reports are a lot of inspiration to a ton of people. Good day.

Zero effects from the recent Panda updates. It’s all about bounce rate and time on site now. Make your sites look good and provide the information your visitors are looking for.
